Jennie Gillies is an experienced senior junior barrister and arbitrator with particular expertise in the following areas:

Jennie spent 15 years at the Bar – practising from 4 Pump Court – before making a lateral move in-house in 2015 when she became the global Head of Dispute Resolution for a major multi-national design and consultancy business overseeing a wide portfolio of disputes both domestic and international. She returned to the Bar in 2019 bringing with her a strong back catalogue of experience both at the Bar and in house. Her experience advising colleagues, sitting in the role of ‘the client’ and instructing legal representatives, makes her uniquely well placed to understand and interact with clients.  Jennie prides herself on being ‘user friendly’ and is quick to roll her sleeves up and get involved.

Jennie regularly advises and represents clients in high value and complex litigation – whether alone, as a senior junior working alongside silks or leading a team with junior assistance – and she is adept at running a multi-disciplinary team.   Jennie has significant experience of major international arbitrations, conducted under ICC, LCIA and other institutional rules, and sits as an arbitrator in domestic and international disputes.

Advising on a £multi-million contractual dispute between parties to a major defence contract, considering contractual interpretation (in particular termination provisions) and claims for inducement of breach of contract against third parties.


Acting on behalf of designer and manufacturer of specialist software products used by government agencies to simulate aircraft for training purposes. Instructed in relation to a £multi-million arbitration against a UK government department.


Advising on the incorporation of terms within a contract between a contractor and its M&E designers for refurbishment of commercial premises.

Jennie’s practice extends to acting on behalf of leaseholders and landlords – including in relation to claims using the new remedies established under the Building Safety Act 2022 (BSA) and funding arrangements for remediation works following the Grenfell Fire tragedy.  She has experience appearing in both the First Tier Tribunal (Property Division) and the High Court (TCC) in relation to applications for Remediation Orders, Remediation Contribution Orders, Building Liability Orders and various ancillary matters arising out of those claims.

Jennie has given lectures on various aspects of the BSA to the new build warranty providers, the Society of Construction Law and the Technology and Construction Bar Association.  Jennie is one of the founding members of the BSA Working Group chaired by The Honourable Mr Justice Constable.
