John is an experienced full-time arbitrator practicing from London. He has accepted appointments as presiding, co-arbitrator and sole arbitrator alongside his commercial practice for more than 25 years. His experience both as counsel and as arbitrator encompasses a wide range of disputes under the auspices of various arbitral bodies such as LCIA, SIAC, ICC, HKIAC, ARIAS as well as ad hoc arbitrations. John specialises in commercial disputes including construction, energy, insurance and reinsurance and international arbitration. His cases span a wide and varied field, including seats in England, France, Switzerland, Bermuda, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, Hong Kong, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Spain and the USA.
Until 2023, John had an extensive commercial litigation practice based both in London and Sydney spanning more than 40 years.
John has a leading practice in insurance and reinsurance with extensive experience with product liability disputes including asbestos related illnesses, health and toxic torts and environmental claims. His experience runs from direct claims to large reinsurance treaty disputes. John was involved in most of the Lloyd’s names actions, disputes over the implementation and development of the Wellington Agreement and the Lloyd’s reconstruction plan. John has extensive knowledge of the London market and Lloyd’s as well as the reinsurance markets in Bermuda, USA and Australia. He has acted for most of the major reinsurers in the London market, a significant number of US insurers and many European reinsurers and insurers.
His recent cases as counsel involved advising insureds on losses arising from earthquakes, flood damage to the Queensland rail system, floods in Thailand and numerous disputes involving CAR, EAR coverage disputes arising out of major infrastructure project and related property coverage disputes.
John has been appointed as arbitrator in many London based ad hoc insurance and reinsurance arbitrations including reinsurance treaties and excess of loss disputes as well as direct insurance claims ranging from liability cover (especially asbestosis and other product liability claims) to property, construction, trade credits and political risks.

An arbitration between Chinese insurer and its reinsurer in relation to a political risk coverage. A dispute concerning the interruption to construction of a large housing development and the extent and nature of the reinsurance coverage. (HIAC – party appointed)
John’s insurance, energy and mining practice has inevitably resulted in his involvement in many high value and high- profile international arbitrations both as counsel and as arbitrator.
These have included large mining and construction disputes, the IT sector and commercial disputes involving long term commodity transactions or financing arrangements as well as a wide range of commercial matters. In the latter area he has had cases involving the “take or pay” contracts involving mineral resources, losses arising from forward exchange transactions and hedging operations and sales of assets.
His current arbitrations involve claims relating to gas pipelines, iron ore developments, joint venture disputes, offshore oil and gas developments and a windfarm development.
John is familiar with all the major international arbitration bodies and their rules. Many of his arbitrations have been conducted under the auspices of the ICC, LCIA, SIAC, HKIAC and ACICA.
As counsel, John appeared in numerous arbitrations around the world involving large infrastructure and construction projects such as tunneling, commercial buildings, housing developments, roads, ports and major energy, power, mining and related construction disputes.
His recent cases as counsel involved iron ore mining disputes in Western Australia, construction disputes involving LNG plants, oil and gas platforms, power plants, biofuel installations and windfarms as well computer control systems for monitoring and optimizing the performance of power plants and desalination facilities.
A dispute concerning the cryogenic tanks constructed as part of an LNG facility in the Northern Territory of Australia. A dispute involving numerous claims for EOTs, variations and the consequences of a the contractor refusing to continue the works (ad hoc – party appointed)
A mining dispute between the concessionaire and the government in Africa. A dispute concerning the right of the government to revoke the mining license and the impact of the restrictions arising from the COVID pandemic (LCIA – president)
A dispute over the pricing provisions in a Power Purchase Agreement involving a power plant in Saudi Arabia. A dispute concerning the proper jurisdiction for the resolution of the dispute as well as the application of the power pricing provisions. (ad hoc – party appointed)
A dispute involving non-payment for parts supplied by a Japanese supplier to an India purchaser (LCIA – party appointed)
A dispute over the construction of a bio-digesting facility. A dispute concerning performance issues as well as cost. (Danish Institute of Arbitration – party appointed)
