Jacob Haddad has experience in a broad range of commercial disputes including both litigation and arbitration, and he accepts instructions in all areas of Chambers’ work. He has a particular interest in shipping, construction and IT & technology.

Before coming to the Bar, Jacob studied English at the University of Cambridge, achieving a Double First and coming 1st in his cohort in his Part I examinations and 8th in his cohort at Part II. He subsequently spent a year studying at Harvard University as a Herchel Smith Fellow. He won multiple academic prizes for his performance at City Law School, including the Everard Ver Heyden Foundation prize for ranking 6th on the Bar Course.

During his pupillage, Jacob was supervised by Alexander Wright KC, Thomas Crangle and Matthew Lavy.

Jacob has assisted with a variety of shipping matters during pupillage and has been instructed in a number of maritime disputes in his own right.

  • Advised on a voyage charterparty dispute relating to issues of the validity of a notice of readiness, the calculation of laytime and alleged vessel damage.

  • Advised on a commodities dispute involving issues of repudiation and non-delivery.

  • Acted as junior counsel in ongoing arbitration proceedings concerning a contract for the international distribution and licensing of goods in the life sciences sector.

  • Instructed as sole counsel to draft a pleading in a cargo claim in the High Court (London Circuit Commercial Court) on an urgent basis.

  • Instructed to draft pleadings in disputes concerning unpaid berthing charges and alleged canal boat defects.

  • Instructed to advise on a potential dispute concerning baseplate corrosion on a vessel.

  • Assisted as junior counsel with an advice in relation to a voyage charterparty dispute which involved issues as to liability in circumstances where Charterers had failed to surrender the original bill of lading to Owners after completion of discharge of cargo, limitation and quantum.

  • Worked on an advice on a charterparty dispute concerning disruption to crew changes caused by Covid-19 restrictions.

  • Assisted with an arbitration concerning a time charterparty dispute which raised novel issues related to the implied indemnity under Clause 8 of the NYPE form.

  • Worked on an advice relating to the proper construction of ventilation obligations in a voyage charterparty.

  • Worked on a pleading in an arbitration involving a dispute arising out of a bareboat charterparty and associated hire and purchase agreement.

  • Assisted with an arbitration involving contracts for the sale of petroleum products which raised novel issues relating to the interaction between assignment and the ‘anti-deprivation’ rule.

  • Attended a CCMC in arbitral proceedings concerning a claim for cargo damage.

  • Attended a summary judgment application for c. USD 180 million in relation to a dispute concerning eight contracts for the sale of petroleum products raising issues of sovereign immunity and sanctions.

  • Attended an arbitration concerning contracts for the sale of two subsea cranes which involved issues of repudiation and unjust enrichment.

  • Attended a CMC in arbitral proceedings related to alleged bearing failures on offshore cranes.

Jacob has assisted with a number of complex, high value construction disputes in both arbitration and litigation during his pupillage, and has been instructed in construction disputes in his own right.

  • Acted as sole counsel in an urgent High Court application in the Companies and Insolvency List regarding the deferral of the dissolution of a company and the reinstatement of liquidators arising out of post-Grenfell cladding litigation.

  • Instructed to advise on a domestic construction dispute involving sewage treatment works.

  • Assisted as junior counsel to Kate Livesey with preparation for a CCMC in a c. £8 million TCC case which includes a claim against a building contractor (the first defendant) for allegedly defective works.

  • Assisting Thomas Crangle and James Leabeater KC with an arbitration involving variations and delay claims brought by an architectural finishes design consultancy against a contractor on a large infrastructure project in the Middle East.

  • Worked on a pleading in a claim concerning allegedly defective roofing works on extra-care housing centres.

  • Assisted with legal research on a variety of matters, including on the assignment of an indemnity under FIDIC standard terms and in relation to resisting an application for a stay of proceedings made by an insolvent contractor.

  • Attended a mediation in relation to a post-Grenfell cladding claim.

  • Worked on a Statement of Claim for an arbitration concerning contracts for the sale of construction and mining equipment.

Jacob has assisted with several IT & Technology cases during pupillage.

  • Worked on an interim injunction application by a healthcare company against a provider of data storage services following a cyber-attack which compromised sensitive customer information.

  • Worked on a Part 18 Request for Further Information in an IT project dispute.

  • Worked on a dispute concerning alleged breach of an IT consulting services contract under which assistance and advice was given in relation to software licensing exposure and audits.

  • Assisted with advice regarding potential injunctive relief in relation to the threatened withdrawal of a trading platform on expiry of an IT services agreement.

Featured Professional Negligence cases


  • Assisted as junior counsel to Kate Livesey with preparation for a CCMC in a c. £8 million defects case in the TCC which includes a professional negligence claim against a firm of project managers and costs consultants (the second defendant) engaged as Employer’s Agent under the relevant building contracts.

  • Assisted with written submissions in response to an application for permission to appeal on the proper approach to quantification of loss of a chance damages in a solicitor’s negligence claim.

Featured Insurance cases


  • Worked on an advice on potential remedies for an insurer following allegedly dishonest conduct by the insured in the course of underlying litigation.

Jacob has been instructed as sole counsel in numerous cases in the County Court, including RTA, credit hire, PPI and breach of contract matters.
